Then got help at Microsoft, advised me to create new user and see if I could install MS Excel for the new user, which worked. I've tried deleting and re-installing MS Excel, does same thing. It opens, but then will not let me open a spreadsheet document nor quit (have to Force-Quit). However, ever since that first shutdown event, MS Excel will not launch. MacBook suffered a spontaneous shutdown (fixed by following online recommendations to reset SMC, and then reset PRAM ). Couple months ago, was using my MacBook Pro (2013, OSX 10.14.4) with a few applications open, one of which was MS Excel (Office 2019, version 16.25).
